The Story Behind Pierrot

Discussion is a fundamental part of how humans learn. However, much of what we say is forgotten or trusted to memory. Some discussions are worth recording and analysing so we can improve how we learn together.

Nearly two decades before Thomas Edison developed the phonograph, Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville successfully dictated human voice using a phonautograph, which etched sound waves into paper using smoke from an oil lamp. Historians, using sound excavation, were recently able to playback some of these 1850s etchings, revealing the first true recording of the human voice, a short refrain from the folk song, “Au Clair de la Lune.” The song lyrics begin with, “In the light of the moon, my friend Pierrot, lend me your pen, to write a word.”

Pierrot represents the next technical leap forward in dictation by joining the principles of the phonautograph with Artificial Intelligence. The result is a powerful new tool to capture and make sense of in-person discussion so we can improve how we learn through discussion.

Engaging with others is fundamental to human life.

We are social beings that frequently find ourselves in conversation. Much of this engagement can be forgotten or simply trusted to our own memory. However, certain conversations are worth transcribing, interpreting, and extending.
